After completing a typing test, you'll receive detailed results that help you understand your current skill level and track improvement over time.
Key Metrics Explained
Words Per Minute (WPM)
WPM is the standard measure of typing speed. TODAY Type calculates "net WPM," which accounts for errors:
- Gross WPM = (Total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ Minutes
- Net WPM = Gross WPM - (Uncorrected errors × penalty)
We divide by 5 because the average English word is 5 characters long, including spaces.
What's a Good WPM?
20-30 WPM - Beginner
30-40 WPM - Below average
40-60 WPM - Average (most jobs require this)
60-80 WPM - Above average
80-100 WPM - Advanced
100+ WPM - Expert
Accuracy
Accuracy shows what percentage of your keystrokes were correct:
- Accuracy = (Correct characters ÷ Total characters) × 100
High accuracy (95%+) is essential for professional work. Even a 98% accuracy rate means 2 errors per 100 characters, which can add up in longer documents.
Character and Error Counts
- Total Characters - All keystrokes including spaces
- Correct Characters - Characters typed correctly
- Errors - Characters typed incorrectly (whether corrected or not)
- Corrected Errors - Mistakes you fixed using backspace
Time Taken
The total duration of your test, from first keystroke to last. This is used to calculate your WPM.

Based on your WPM and accuracy, TODAY Type assigns you a skill level:
