Home Row Position

The foundation of touch typing is proper finger placement on the home row:

Home Row Keys

Left Hand: A (pinky) S (ring) D (middle) F (index)
Right Hand: J (index) K (middle) L (ring) ; (pinky)
Thumbs: Rest on the Space bar

Finding Home Position

Look for the small raised bumps on the F and J keys. These help you find the home row without looking at the keyboard.

Finger Assignments

Each finger is responsible for specific keys:

Left Hand

  • Pinky: Q, A, Z, 1, Tab, Caps Lock, Shift
  • Ring: W, S, X, 2
  • Middle: E, D, C, 3
  • Index: R, T, F, G, V, B, 4, 5

Right Hand

Practice Makes Perfect

Consistent finger placement is more important than speed when learning. Focus on using the correct fingers, and speed will naturally follow.
